Is Technology bad for us?

I watched a video caused me to reflect on technology and the impact it has on our lives. Technology is changing our lives at a rapid pace with music, video, social media and shopping all in the palm of our hands. I am in my 30’s and staggered at the speed of change, I remember a time before the internet, iPod’s and iPhone’s.

The video below has many good point’s and it is true that we need to find a balance or we will become isolated and artificial.

Now you have watched the video, I wanted to highlight some of the great things I have personally benefited from due to the technology we have.

1. I worked away over an 18 month period, during that time I could video chat with my wife and the family. For anyone who travels, they will tell you that there is no substitute for being there, but this comes close. I could see my nephews grow up and join in with family meals. It’s no replacement for being with them, but it is better than not at all.

2. On a similar track, my mum is often too ill to go out, video chat has allowed her to be included in family meals, see the view from the top of a cliff and share those experiences.

3. Social media allows me to keep in touch with many people I would have lost track – I can say happy birthday, share their big moments in life and they can keep up with what I am doing in life.

With all this good, we do need to be careful, it is too easy to substitute life with technology.
